Ever tried to walk a friend, family member, or customer through the process of trying to diagnose, troubleshoot, and fix a computer problem over the phone, e-mail or via an online messenger? Or, perhaps you’re the one needing the computer help and are equally if not more frustrated with the situation, as you’re the one without a working computer. Whether it’s the back-and-forth waiting of an e-mail correspondence, the ambiguity of instant messages, or the frustrated tone in your helper’s voice over the phone, having your computer fixed remotely is certainly not a pleasant experience. Various utilities exist that allow one person to remotely connect to another’s computer, but they’re often cumbersome and use insecure, open connections, requiring complicated installations and configurations that are rarely worth the trouble. Even the simplest of these programs will not work through a corporate or home firewall installed with most broadband connections. | Posted By: sbest Date: 2006-12-27 16:28 Summary: EchoVNC 2.00 Now AvailableThe EchoVNC team has released version 2.00 of their open-source, secure remote-desktop tool for Windows. Unlike previous versions, EchoVNC is now a full-featured VNC Server and VNC Viewer platform, rather than simply a connection utility for other VNC flavors. Source and binaries are available here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=133100 EchoVNC supports the following features: o Secure VNC sessions to Windows PC’s behind unconfigured firewalls, routers, and web-proxies o A “See Who’s Available” feature in the Viewer, for point-and-click connection initiation o A “dynamic-DNS” capability for VNC Servers without static IP addresses o End-to-end data security with OpenSSL’s 128-bit AES encryption o Support for HTTP, SOCKS and ISA/NTLM web-proxies o Fully interoperable with other VNC flavors As EchoVNC is based (with thanks!) on Ultr@VNC, it also provides these capabilities: o Remote-desktoping with either VNC password or NT authentication o Bidirectional file-transfer o Real time chat window o Utilizes the open-source “Mirror Driver” for improved VNC performance EchoVNC is a secure remote-desktop tool based on VNC. With it, a Windows PC can be remotely accessed regardless of firewall, router or web-proxy configuration. EchoVNC combines the open-source echoWare DLL directly into the feature-rich Ultr@VNC Server and Viewer platform to create the easiest-to-use, “firewall-friendly” VNC platform available. With echoWare, client-server and peer-to-peer Internet application can easily and securely connect with each other regardless of any intervening firewalls, routers, or web-proxies. EchoWare-enabled clients interconnect with each other via a shareware application called “echoServer” — together with EchoVNC and InstantVNC (our “single-click”, zero-install VNC Server) it’s the basis of the EchoWare Remote Support System: a remote-desktop solution that is “firewall-friendly”, highly secure, and extremely low cost. | Posted By: sbest Date: 2005-11-14 09:08 Summary: EchoWare Remote Support System now availablePALO ALTO, Calif. – November 14, 2005 Echogent Systems, a leading provider of downloadable web services and SOHO peer-to-peer networking platforms for open source systems, today announced general availability of the EchoWare Remote Support System, a remote-desktop platform based on open-source components that provides user support professionals with full control over their customers networks without imposing monthly service fees and vulnerability risks posed by third-party servers. The EchoWare Remote Support System is available for download at http://www.echogent.com. The problem with most web-based remote-desktop services is that they require service providers to go through a third party’s server, which adds one more barrier between the provider and their customer, said Scott Best, founder of Echogent Systems. The EchoWare Remote Support System was designed with our customers customer in mind. It doesnt require any changes to the end-users firewall or web-proxies, as all connections are made outbound through their network security system. We are eager to let the public know that finally a secure, firewall-friendly remote support software package based on open source software exists. The EchoWare Remote Support System provides a firewall-friendly, remote desktop capability for the Windows OS. Designed for both advanced Internet users and user-support professionals, the EchoWare system includes free, open source end-user software, as well as EchoServer relay-server software, a fully-functional try-before-buy shareware application available for both the Windows and Linux operating systems. Shareware registration is based on the number of maximum clients; up to 100 clients can be supported for a one-time cost of $200. Once registered, the remote support system is fully owned and run directly by the user support professional. Unlike alternative solutions, the EchoWare Remote Support System carries no additional or hidden monthly fees, and most of the components are fully open source. I looked at other services that require connections to unknown third-party mediation servers and carry monthly subscription charges, said Robert Gimbel, founder of CybarWorks, a Scottsdale-based IT services company that provides business solution consulting. With the EchoWare Remote Support System, I can own the whole solution, minimizing my total cost of ownership and risk. I especially like that even if Echogent’s servers go down, my customers’ capabilities will not be affected. The EchoWare Remote Support System is being widely used by user support professionals looking for a solution that promises: * A lower total cost of ownership (TCO) * Ease of management * The highest levels of security for end users * Proven stability and security with Virtual Network Computer (VNC) and OpenSSL software and components. The EchoWare communication platform, upon which the EchoWare Remote Support System is based, is extensible to any future user-to-user connections, such as video chat, soft phone and work group collaboration. The EchoWare platform enables simple, secure and reliable peer-to-peer networking connections based on open source technology. About Echogent Systems: privately held and headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Echogent Systems, Inc. is a leading provider of downloadable web services and SOHO peer-to-peer networking platforms for open source systems. Echogent Systems provides user support professionals, SOHO and individual users with a cost-effective software and services platform that enables secure peer-to-peer network connections without the need for costly and difficult adjustments to the end users networking equipment and network-management software. | How It Works | |
Our Software is Outgoing
When using the EchoWare Remote Support System to connect two users, firewalls or routers on the user-side identify all Internet traffic as “outgoing”, thus eliminating the need for port forwarding adjustments. These adjustments
are normally required to allow a successful connection, as firewalls and NAT’ing routers
are put in place specifically to prevent “incoming” traffic. 66.123.20.58, Translation – “Office PC”
Between personal passwords, network access codes and telephone numbers, users have enough numbers to worry about throughout their day. The EchoWare Remote Support System utilizes a nickname or alias system for all remote support connections instead of traditional IP addresses. Now users no longer have to write down or remember long IP addresses
every time they want to initiate a connection.
Echogent’s EchoWare Remote Support System combines the EchoVNC remote-desktop tool with the EchoServer application to create a remote support package that eliminates the need to reconfigure firewall or router settings. The EchoWare Remote Support System includes both client software and the packet relay server – meaning quick, easy and secure access from wherever the end-user prefers to be.
There are a number of remote desktop applications that utilize packet relay server capabilities, but all restrict the end-user to the boundaries of the application’s interface and access point.
The EchoWare Remote Support System is built upon open-source echoWare technology that allows any Internet application to incorporate the same capabilities without the hassle of reconfiguring existing network security and accessibility settings.
